What is a Promise Ring?

Jewelry, who was presented with the promise ring from her husband of a year and half prior to their engagement. "Now it's not just "dating"--you have a physical sign of your love to display outside of your home."

History of Promise Rings


Brinkman states that the concept of the giving of an engagement ring as an act of love and affection is several hundreds of years old. The custom of wearing rings to demonstrate the utmost loyalty and devotion also goes back to the early times. Evidence suggests that Roman brides wore engagement rings from the 2nd century BC. Posy rings, engraved with romantic poems, go back to the 16th century in England as well as Acrostic rings - which spell out words in gemstones --were popular in the Georgian and Victorian eras. As an example, a ruby, emerald, garnet, amethyst ruby, diamond spells "regard" and the combination of a diamond, an emerald, amethyst, ruby, emerald amethyst sapphire, ruby and topaz spells "dearest".
